backstory: Mike Huckabee

I figured someone would ask about my Huckabee comment earlier, so here’s the abbreviated backstory. In the summer of 1994, I was attending a six-week summer school program in Arkansas called Governor’s School. My six weeks on the campus of Hendrix College were the first time I was really exposed to people not like me; my high school in northern Arkansas was incredibly homogenous. (Incidentally, it was also at AGS that I was introduced to the Internet — weee!) At any rate, Mike Huckabee — then lieutenant governor — came and talked to us one day, and while I do not remember precisely *what* he said, I do recall that he had some less-than-fuzzy comments about homosexuals, and it really pissed me off. (At AGS, I knew some people who were gay, and his comments offended us all.)

I have another Huckabee story, which I’ll add later.
