From the Feb. 21, 2005 issue of US News & World Report (p. 6):

Just Like Clinton

Get ready for another Arkansas governor with a clever slogan to hit the presidential trail. This time it’s Republican Mike Huckabee, who’s calling himself a “new Republican” as he ramps up for the race. Like Bill Clinton, the guv is popular, plugged in, plays an instrument — guitar — and even hails from Hope.

The first (and last) time I heard Huckabee speak was at 1994 Arkansas Governor’s School, where the only thing I remember him saying was something about how homosexuality was immoral and blah blah blah. I tuned everything else out. And decided then and there I would never, ever, ever support Huckabee in ANYTHING. Seriously. I loathe that man as politician, governor, etc.

A casual friend of mine from a previous Arkansas summer program (the AEGIS French Camp at ATU — “and this one time, at French camp” …), Robert, sent me a letter shortly after I returned from Governor’s School with a bumper sticker enclosed for Huckabee. Poor guy had been led astray and was volunteering for Huckabee’s campaign at the time.

Two or three years later at college, I had agreed at the last minute to talk to a group of incoming freshmen at their first-semester orientation class, and the very same Robert was in the class — how random is that?!?! — and after class adjourned, we chatted a bit. I said, “I remember you sending me a Huckabee bumper sticker.” And he said, “AHHH! Don’t let anyone hear you say that! I am *mortified* now that I ever supported that man.”
