the apocalypse is most certainly nigh

I cannot believe it.

I’m looking at my computer screen, numb with shock.

I’ve spent the last 30 minutes getting ready for school while silenced by the enormity of what transpired last night.

The Mountain Home Bombers — my high school alma mater — managed to defeat our archrival, the Harrison Goblins, AGAIN last night.

For those who weren’t around last fall when I was exuberantly predicting — and then celebrating — the Bombers’ triumph over the Goblins after 19 years of losing, well, you can catch up here.

I didn’t head north for this year’s matchup because, honestly, after 28 years of watching the Bombers lose year after year, I didn’t think it was possible for them to beat Harrison, this time IN Harrison, two years in a row. Despite the fact that we’re technically a bigger school, Harrison has ALWAYS had the superior football team to Mountain Home. They’ve won championships in their division; Mountain Home, matched against some of the biggest schools in the state, struggles to end the year with a break-even record.

I spent a lot of time yesterday morning wondering if I’d made the right choice. Up until the very end, I kept most of my day’s schedule totally free, so if I made a last-minute decision to hit the road in support of my Bombers, I would be able to do so. In the end, though, I opted not to go.

DAMMIT, LIZ! I cannot *believe* missed their far more triumphant win … I would have probably died of a spontaneous heart attack of joy had I been at the game. Check this out:

Bombers make it two in a row over Gobs

HARRISON — There’s a new winning streak in the storied Mountain Home-Harrison rivalry, and it belongs to the Bombers.

With a goal-line stand on a 2-point conversion attempt with :30 left, the Bombers halted a dramatic Harrison comeback to hang on for a heart-pounding, 16-15 win.

Goblin sophomore quarterback Matt Brown marched the home team 82 yards on 11 plays — going 5-for-5 through the air — and capped the drive with a 1-yard run to pull Harrison within a point in the final minute.

But with the game, and a 20-year Harrison home winning streak on the line, the Bomber defense answered the call by stopping Brown short on the two-point attempt.

“It just comes down to the young men who play the game, we told them you’ve got one play to win the ballgame,” recalled Bomber head football coach Shane Patrick, whose team ended Harrison’s 19-year winning streak over Mountain Home a year ago at Bomber Stadium. “They came off the ball and made a big play right there.
