virtual hockey

My friend Matt called tonight in an unusually good mood. (Read about why on his site.) During the course of the conversation, he mentioned the fact that hockey seems unlikely to occur this year because of contract disagreements. If I understood the details, I’d relay them, but ultimately they’re not totally necessary here.

Anyway, Matt’s concocting this brilliant (at least, I think it is!) scheme to fabricate an entire season of hockey — as though it were ACTUALLY BEING PLAYED. He wants to recruit a small team of writers to fictionalize stories about hockey games (he will provide box scores, you write the story as you wish), nothing elaborate, just a very few paragraphs with lots of commentary on fights. He’d also like some weekly columnists to weigh in on what’s happening in the league. All of this will be posted to a Web site (presumably his, www.dumpinggrounds.com) and available for the world to see and enjoy during this time in hockey twilight.

He’s also considering capturing some video from his Xbox and using that as “highlight” footage to accompany the stories. (That was my idea, thank you very much!)

Interested? Let Matt know (or post a comment here and he’ll get in touch with you). He did ask that I stress a couple of things. First, he’s already got writers for the Stars and the Red Wings. And second, he wants this to progress as though it were absolutely real, so unless the computer models the Stars (Matt’s favorite team) winning the Stanley Cup, it’s not gonna happen. Every team will have wins and losses. No sweeps in Matt’s league. 🙂

I think it sounds fabulous, but as I’ve not ever been a huge hockey fan I’d feel less than qualified to join in on the writing personally.
